Women Empowering Women
Not only does it speak to our current cultural moment, but it is also, simply, a well written story, one which validates our collective need to resist the systems that oppress us and which encourages love and hope in spite of it all.
There’s a conversation that I’m sure many others who identify as feminists have had. It goes something like this: “Are you a feminist?” “Yes.” “Oh, I’m not because feminists are so…” followed by many things that aren’t true about or believed by most feminists.
Though many people in this generation only know Canadian teen TV classic Degrassi as the show that launched international superstar Drake, it has pushed boundaries and comforted young audiences for over four decades.
Violence in our society, especially gender-based violence, is not simply the fault of those who committed the crime. The blame lies, not only with the perpetrators but with those who continue to defend, excuse and enable them.
In this post, I want to highlight some of my favourite films directed by women that I consider underrated. It’s important that we continue to support work created by women to ensure that it continues to be made.
