Women Empowering Women
Our country’s history is one of violence, both in terms of the land and the culture that was, and continues to be, stolen from Indigenous peoples. It is clear that decolonization is the responsibility of all of us. This is a process which requires continual work and a conscious unlearning of the narratives we have been fed.
It has been over a week since the world has celebrated International Women’s Day. Yet, the hype of female empowerment has not left our digital presence. From blogs covering stories of influential women to media posts outlining the struggles that limit women and girls globally, this year – and arguably this decade – has given immense visibility to the world of women.
Women’s clothing, fashion and dress have been ridiculed for decades. The focus on what we wear and its messages constantly are the basis of how people, specifically women, are judged and controlled within society.
I would like to share that story with you and dedicate a love letter to my younger self and all the young Black girls reading this.
Whatever your current circumstance is, you can still make this summer your Hot Girl Summer. The summer anthem is all about women empowerment, and there’s never been a more urgent time than this to feel empowered and to empower others.
