Touching of my curls without consent and being told that I looked better with straight hair is a universal experience of black and mixed girls growing up in primarily white spaces.
Underneath is a system so deeply entrenched within our society that we tend not to notice it. This system revolves around a series of biases, more specifically the biases that exist within the police and justice system centering around ideas of “white supremacy.”
Romance novels aren’t silly or trashy at all. In fact I think many of them are very well written and interesting.
Why is being “like other girls” something that is seen as so undesirable by many?
Our country’s history is one of violence, both in terms of the land and the culture that was, and continues to be, stolen from Indigenous peoples. It is clear that decolonization is the responsibility of all of us. This is a process which requires continual work and a conscious unlearning of the narratives we have been fed.
